Windy Trees LLC

tree expertise & craftsmanship of the outdoors

Windy Trees LLC specializes in tree work and custom hardscapes. I helped them establish the brand basics: a logo, font, color, and style guide. They opted for 2 rounds of revisions with the end goal of creating a vibrant, modern logo. I documented the loose process that we followed below. It’s neat to see how the project grew throughout both rounds.

2 rounds of logo revisions

The logo revision process is all about trimming and refining down sketches until we get to a final logo. Here’s how we do it (summarized).

Round 1 is designed to give 3-4 basic sketches which represent totally different directions to take the project. In this Round, we aren’t concerned about adding any color, or even looking at font choices. It’s all about the logo itself and what images best represent the company. The goal is to take 2 of these for further development

Round 2 takes the 2 previous ideas that were chosen and fleshes them out, still in black & white. Here we test different trunk shapes, leaf sizes, branch styles, and more. It’s always cool to see how slight variations of these sketches can change the whole look and feel of the design. At the same time, we want to introduce some color and font ideas, so that we can discuss how everything works together. From here, we pick a winner, which gets a third mini-round to put on some finishing touches to make sure we like how the font and colors work with the logo mark.

a logo that blows you away

99% of tree and landscape companies use a green tree in their logo, and have a clip-art leaf as their logo. That’s why we loved the idea of a vibrant and vivid teal as Windy Tree’s brand color, and that’s why we were committed to making a custom tree that reflects the personal and customized services they provide.
